In prehistoric times Dimentiara was much hotter and alligators could be found at polar latitudes. As the climate cooled most were driven further south into subtropical biomes, except for tiny remnant populations in the temperate West Horn Province of Zaitopia. The Ridgeback Mountains, which exist on a fault line, have many hot springs and geothermal pools in their foothills and surrounding lowlands which alligators take refuge in during the winter. Extensive osteoderm coverage aids in thermoregulation and nutrient storage in the cold months of the year. Travelers are sometimes treated to the rare and surreal sight of West Horn Gators hauling themselves onto snowbanks to cool off in the dead of winter.
