A Kreature Tamer is a person who practices the art of Kreature Taming.

Overview

Tamers are officially licensed by the Kreature Combat Federation to legally own Kreatures for use in Kreature Combat or other activities. In order to earn their license, one must be at least 18 years old. The usual method for obtaining a license is to apply at the nearest accredited Tamer Registration Office and pass an official exam. Alternatively, students can take a Kreature Studies class when they're in high school and if they pass with a score of 85% or higher, they can bring their report card to the registration office and receive their license as soon as they turn 18. Upon obtaining their Level 1 license, a Tamer can compete in officially sanctioned events and purchase Rank C Kreatures. They can return to the registration office and obtain a Level 2 and a Level 3 license to purchase higher ranking Kreatures.

Civilians are permitted own Rank D Kreatures without a license. However, minors are not allowed to purchase them.

Depending on where their ambitions and interests lie, Tamers may hire a small support staff and compete in the KCF's Singles League, or group up with other Tamers to compete in the more illustrious Team Circuit. By competing in matches and building experience, a Tamer may successively increase their Grade in the official KCF hierarchy.

Repeated infractions in battle or failing to pass compound inspections can cause a Tamer to have their license suspended or revoked. Using a Kreature to commit a crime will also result in a Tamer not only losing their license but being blacklisted from the KCF. Depending in the severity of their crime, a blacklisted Tamer may eventually reapply after they've carried out their sentence, or be banned from ever owning a Kreature ever again, regardless of its rank or its type.

Cliques and Subcultures

Kreature Tamers not a monolithic group. They are highly diverse, with all manner of different goals, techniques and philosophies in how they approach their vocation. The following examples are not hard categories, and individual Tamers may overlap with the various groups.

Chiqs

Chic Tamers, or simply “Chics”, are generally considered to be the dominant clique among the Kreature Taming community, the Movers and Shakers of the profession. They are Tamers of high social status; attractive, trendy, stylish, proud and more than a little stuck up. Many of them are influencers or models. They have a reputation for being highly skilled, if perhaps overly orthodox. The Solar Storm Tamer Academy churns them out by the boatload.

Scholars

Tamers who are more academically inclined, obsessed with facts and figures and technical minutiae. Their encyclopedic knowledge of Kreature stats and battle tactics and adherence to strict, well-proven training regimens serves them well in combat, especially in support roles. One might expect them to be rather orthodox (and they often are), but like an obsessive competitive gamer, their inclination for analysis often results in them being the first to develop innovative techniques that become the new standard.

Alts

A loosely-defined counterculture of Kreature Tamers who reject conformity and exist on the fringes of the community. They are ideologically opposed to the Chics and their superficiality. They have a reputation for being rough and rowdy and rebellious and utilize more unorthodox techniques in battle. Despite this, they are begrudgingly respected by the other cliques for their willingness to speak truth to power and criticize the KCF when it’s warranted.

Keepers

Experts on Kreature Husbandry who are highly attuned to their Kreatures’ individual needs. They believe in forging powerful bonds with their Kreatures through meticulous care. Kreatures that are well looked after and doted on are more receptive to mindlinking, and this forms the core of their philosophy. They have a penchant for DIY and pride themselves in their custom habitat builds.

Splicers

The mad scientists of the Kreature Taming community. They treat Kreature Combat as a means to an end: a testing ground in their goal of creating new mutagenic formulas and developing ever more powerful proprietary strains of Battle Kreatures. While many go into the lucrative business of bioengineering, others hoard their formulas to themselves as closely guarded trade secrets.

Warriors

Through mindlinking, it is possible for some of a Battle Kreature’s natural aptitude for combat to rub off on the Tamer. It is also beneficial to for Kreature Tamers to be have prior knowledge of fighting. K-Fighters take this philosophy to its logical conclusion; they are practitioners of Martial Arts who use Kreature Combat to supplement their training. They are known for being ferocious in battle and often specialize in melee combat.

Spiritualists

Many Tamers liken mindlinking to a spiritual experience, with both Tamer and Kreature inheriting a part of the other’s soul. Spiritualists are Tamers who run with this belief. They have a quasi-religious reverence for mindlinking, seeking enlightenment through Kreature Taming and taking frequent pilgrimages. There are many sub-factions among the Spiritualists that range from relatively benign to straight-up cults.

Nostalgics

A subculture of Tamers who embrace the retro style of Kreature Taming. They admire the greatest Tamers of the past, and as a fashion statement they wear translucent pockets and utilize old technology such as K-Squares and vintage amulets. The larger their collection of vintage gear, the higher their status within their group. As a result, the image they cultivate often ends up being more of a hyper-concentrated caricature of the past rather than a genuine reflection of it.

Hobbyists

Tamers who don’t make a career out of their vocation, who raise Kreatures and participate in low-stakes sparring matches entirely for fun. They still need to be licensed to be allowed to own Kreatures above Rank D+, but don’t concern themselves with the grind and raising their Grade. Chics look down on them as filthy casuals.
