Their skin is heavily armoured with osteoderms, even along the belly, so they are rarely hunted and very common throughout their range. They are slightly more cold-tolerant than their larger cousin, the [[Royal Caiman]], and in regions where the two species overlap, the Royal Caiman relegates the Marsh Gator to mesopredator status and even occasionally preys on them.
